June is Alzheimers and Brain Awareness month. The Alzheimer’s Association estimates that 5.3 million suffer from the disease in the U.S., with a new diagnosis every 67 seconds. It is the sixth leading cause of death in the nation, and one in three seniors dies with the disease. Specialty Home Care recently provided special training for all our caregivers to assure competency in caring for those with Alzheimer’s and dementia and we serve many seniors who suffer from one or the other. Parade Magazine had a good article in its June 21, 2015 issue http://parade.com/405451/paulaspencer/people-power-a-better-world-for-people-with-alzheimers/.
The article refers to an app which allows family members to create a package of music, images and prompts to stir memories of the patient’s past, providing hours of stimulation and happiness for sufferers. The GreyMatters app can be downloaded from greymatterstous.com.
